IguanaWORLD Habitat - Step 6 (The Basking Shelves)

Description: Construct and Install the Basking Shelves

Material List:

Qty Size Description Usage
8' 1"x1" Square Oak Stock Support Legs
12' 1"x1"x.50" Aluminum L Channel Shelf Supports
8' 1" wide Oak Trim (L Shaped) Shelf Trim
1 Roll Melamine Iron On Edging Shelf Trim
1 Can Spray On Adhesive Auto Parts Store
1 Roll (about 6') Indoor Outdoor Carpet Substrate
1 Tube Window and Door Caulking Caulking
1 Box - #8x3/4" Wood Screws Secure Trim
1 Box - #8x1 1/4" Wood Screws Secure Trim

Note: Decide what shape you want your shelves to be in and cut accordingly. You should have scrap that meets your need at this point. Iron on the melamine edging to all exposed wood surfaces according to the package directions. Although they will be covered in oak trim - or facing the walls - the melamine edging will seal out the moisture. On the edges facing the world, measure and cut the trim with a mitre box to provide a finished look. Stain the trim and apply a good coat of polyurethane accordingly. Attach the Aluminum channel to the walls where the shelves will be located and screw the shelves in securely from the bottom. Use the oak stock to provide support from the floor up. See my enclosure if you have questions here.

Caulk Caulk Caulk! Finally apply headliner adhesive and press your precut substrate (and indoor/outdoor carpet will do) in place. The adhesive will hold the substrate down, yet allow replacement if need be down the line.

Note: The oak trim I used is in the shape of an L. Once cut and applied, the L shape overlaps the top surface of the shelf. The substrate (carpet) lies flush with the surface of the shelf, and the oak trim provides a finished look to the whole thing.

Construction Time : About 2.0 Hours
